Profile

Biography

I graduated in 1994 from Liverpool University with a B.Ed (Hons) degree in Education with English and Foundation Mathematics.  Since graduating I have undertaken a wide and varied range of roles within education, including ‘Expert’ Literacy teacher for the Local Authority (Warrington), Early Years Manager, Assistant and Deputy Headteacher and 2 Headteacher positions, across a number of local authorities, including Knowsley, Liverpool and Warrington.  Additionally, in 2000, I was seconded to a Numeracy Consultant role for Halton LEA which required me to deliver the National Numeracy Strategy to new and experienced classteachers across the borough.  I have the National Professional Qualification for Headteachers (NPQH) and am currently studying for a Masters degree in Teaching and Learning (at Edge Hill University)

Research Interests

I have particular interests in how our earliest learners develop their knowledge and skills in the EYFS settings.  I also enjoy teaching and reading/researching about English and Mathematics in Primary Schools, in particular how to engage children in interactive, practical activities which help to extend and develop thinking and learning.

With regard to UG and PG students, I am interested in how to support and signpost support, for their well-being and mental health.  I believe that students should feel able to study in a supportive and nurturing environment which is facilitated by knowledgeable and well-informed tutors/lecturers.

Throughout my role as Assistant Pathway Leader for the Primary 3-7 (Early Years) Post Graduate programme, I have an active interest in developing the role of School Based Mentors and the work that they undertake when supporting trainee teachers.

Teaching

Currently, I teach at Edge Hill University on the Primary 3-7 (Early Years) Post Graduate programme, where I am the Assistant Pathway Leader.  Additionally, I also teach on the Primary 3-7 (Early Years) Under Graduate programme too, with a particular focus on the curriculum and Personal Professional Development (PPD).
