At Edge Hill University, we understand every student’s journey into higher education is unique. That’s why we offer an Integrated Foundation Year. A dedicated initial year of study designed to help you build the confidence, academic skills and subject knowledge needed to thrive in your chosen degree.
You’ll study a four-year programme, which will begin with the Foundation Year. And then you’ll progress onto a full honours degree, provided you meet the required pass mark. We offer two distinct Foundation Year options to suit your interests and career goals:
STEM

The STEM Foundation Year is ideal if you’re aiming for a degree in science, technology, engineering or mathematics. This route prepares you for a degree in:
- Biology and Biosciences
- Computer Science
- Engineering
- Mathematics
- Physical Geography and Geology
- Psychology
- Sport and Physical Activity
When you apply for the STEM Foundation Year, you’ll choose from a series of designated degree programmes. This means you’ll know exactly which degree you’re working towards from the start. So you’ll have a clear and focused path through your studies.
Throughout the year, you’ll develop core scientific knowledge and transferable skills such as academic writing, critical analysis and systematic thinking. These core skills will set you up for success in a science-based degree.
Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences

The Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Foundation Year is perfect if your interests lie in creative, cultural or social disciplines. This pathway can lead to degrees in:
- Business and Management
- Education
- English
- Geography
- History
- Media
- Sociology and Social Sciences
Unlike the STEM route, the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Foundation Year offers a broader subject focus. So you’ll apply to the general pathway and once you’ve successfully completed the year, you can be considered for a wide range of degree programmes within your specialist field. This flexibility allows you to explore your interests and find your niche before committing to a specific course.
On this route, you’ll gain essential skills in communication, academic writing and critical thinking, while exploring introductory modules tailored to your chosen subject area.
Who is a Foundation Year for?

Our Integrated Foundation Years are for anyone who has the ambition to study for a degree by may not currently meet the standard entry requirements. We understand that doesn’t always follow a straight path, and that’s okay. A Foundation Year could be the right choice for you if:
- You studied different subjects at school/college and now want to change direction.
- You’re considering a career change and need a recognised qualification to take the next step.
- You’re looking for a supportive environment to build confidence before starting a full degree.

What are the benefits of studying a Foundation Year?
Choosing to study a degree with an Integrated Foundation Year at Edge Hill offers a wide range of benefits. Especially if you’re looking for a more confident and well-prepared start to university life.
Firstly, and most importantly, the Foundation Year gives you time and space to develop the essential academic skills you’ll need throughout your degree. You’ll build your abilities in areas like writing, communication, problem-solving and independent learning. And you’ll learn it all in a supportive environment that’s designed to help you succeed.
You’ll also gain an introduction to your chosen subject area, helping you feel more prepared and engaged when you begin your first year of undergraduate study. Whether you’re joining the STEM or Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences route, you’ll explore relevant topics that lay the groundwork for your future learning.
And there’s more. Beyond the academic skills, the Foundation Year is also a great opportunity to:
