March 24, 2023

Tributes have been paid to former Edge Hill University Governor Andrew Foster CBE, who has died following a short illness.

Vice-Chancellor Dr John Cater said: “Andrew was a force of nature, and the kind of person you always expected to be there. He was a friend, but, for the University, he was a long-standing, informed and erudite member of the Board of Governors.

“Our thoughts are with his wife Sarah and their children and grandchildren. He will be much missed.”

As well as his position on the Board of Governors, Andrew was chair of Manx Care, which appointed him at the end of 2020. He was also a non-executive director at Health Education England and a trustee of ENT UK.

Born in Wigan, Andrew also spent 12 years as chief executive of Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (WWL) until his retirement in 2019.

During Andrew’s time as chief executive of WWL he oversaw numerous changes and the Trust achieved high staff survey scores and was named HSJ Provider Trust of the Year in 2014.

After leaving WWL he worked at NHS England for a period on delivery of the NHS People Plan, and was interim lead of the NHS Leadership Academy.

In 2020 he worked on the covid-19 crisis response at NHSE, including efforts to support more staff to return to clinical work.
