90 Years
Headshot of Dame Sue Ion

This year, we’re celebrating 90 years at our multi-award-winning Ormskirk Campus and are delighted to welcome back Honorary Doctor and global expert in nuclear engineering, Dame Sue Ion GBE.

Internationally recognised for her expertise in energy strategy and tireless advocacy of the safe and efficient use of nuclear power for a better world, she was made a Dame Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire (GBE) in 2022 for this work and her commitment to fostering the next generation of engineers from under-represented groups.

Dame Sue, who was awarded an Edge Hill Honorary Doctor of Science in 2017, will talk about her career path, the challenges she overcame to success and how she continues to serve as an outstanding role model and advocate of STEM careers.

Her illustrious career included nearly 30 years at British Nuclear Fuels Limited. She has since taken on a range of senior roles supporting key government decisions and advising on strategic policies. She has worked tirelessly to promote the benefits of the industry and was credited with persuading Tony Blair to change Labour’s official government policy on nuclear power, allowing the development of an energy policy that recognises the need for nuclear, alongside coal and renewable sources, to meet Britain’s future energy requirements.
