Chinese Film Night: Black Dog

As part of the work of the Edge Hill University Confucius Institute, in partnership with Chongqing Normal University, we are delighted to host the first in a series of Chinese Film Nights. These events aim to bring Chinese culture to life through film, art and language, creating opportunities for students, staff and members of the wider community to engage with and better understand China’s rich cultural heritage.

Black Dog

Director: Guan Hu

Cert: 12

Running Time: 1 hour 50 mins

Set in a remote desert town in north-west China, Black Dog tells the story of Lang, a quiet and solitary man who returns to his hometown after being released from prison. Tasked with helping to clear stray dogs from the streets as the town prepares for change, Lang forms an unexpected bond with a mysterious black dog. Through this unlikely friendship, both man and animal begin a journey of redemption and belonging.

Blending striking cinematography with a reflective and atmospheric narrative, Black Dog offers a moving portrait of life on the margins of a rapidly changing society. The film explores themes of loneliness, resilience and connection, while providing a powerful glimpse into contemporary Chinese cinema.

Join us for an evening of film, culture and conversation as we experience this compelling story together.
