Overview
This is a core, year 3 module of the MSc Surgical Care Practice Programme. In this module, the Trainee Surgical Care Practitioner (TSCP) will develop advanced knowledge and understanding relevant to their chosen surgical speciality. The module aims to develop and build on the core generic skills of working in surgical care from phase one of the programme in years 1 and 2, whilst concentrating on specialist aspects of surgery, clinical examination, ward, clinical based patient care and operative procedures relevant to their chosen clinical speciality.

What are the key aims of the module?
In this module, the Trainee Surgical Care Practitioner (TSCP) will develop advanced knowledge and understanding relevant to their chosen surgical speciality. The module aims to develop and build on the core generic skills of working in surgical care from phase one of the programme in years 1 and 2, whilst concentrating on specialist aspects of surgery, clinical examination, ward, clinical based patient care and operative procedures relevant to their chosen clinical speciality.
What will I study?
The core content of this module will focus on developing theoretical knowledge and understanding of a wide range of clinical settings across the patient journey within the TSCP’s chosen surgical speciality. These settings will provide a breadth of clinical and technical learning, these include:
- the outpatient department
- preoperative clinics
- the operating theatre
- surgical wards/assessment units
- the emergency department
- critical care
- medical wards/assessment units
- palliative care
- the imaging department
- specialist departments within the TSCP’s chosen surgical speciality
Within these settings, the TSCP will study the following topics:
- Anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, aetiology, common conditions/presentations
- History taking and physical examination
- Pre/peri, intra and post-operative management of the specialist surgical patient
- Clinical investigations relating to the speciality
- Management of a range of symptoms listed in the Curriculum Framework for the Surgical Care Practitioner
- Principles of the management of a range of conditions highlighted in the Curriculum Framework for the Surgical Care Practitioner
- Principles of relevant surgical procedures
- Sub-speciality theoretical knowledge (if applicable)
- Sub-speciality clinical skills (if applicable)
How will I be assessed?
- Written examination (90 minute Multiple choice questions and short answer questions)
- 15 minute defended oral case study presentation
Both elements of assessments must be passed to achieve an overall pass in the module
On successful completion you will:
Critically apply in-depth knowledge and understanding of basic sciences to maintain high quality, safe, person-centred care within the trainee surgical care practitioner’s surgical speciality.
Synthesise clinical information and apply critical clinical reasoning to enact an evidence-based management plan when undertaking, clinics, ward rounds, physical examinations and clinical investigations in relation to the trainee surgical care practitioner’s surgical speciality.
Synthesise clinical information and apply critical clinical reasoning to enact an evidence-based management plan in surgical procedures relating to the trainee surgical care practitioner’s surgical speciality.
