Who is this module for?
Prospective participants are expected to be experienced health professionals within their field, with some involvement in clinical education. This may include, for example, supervising students on practice placements, assessing students, trainees, or junior staff in clinical skills, or delivering formal teaching sessions to learners or colleagues.
This module is only available to students who are undertaking HEA4523 and HEA4525 as part of the PGCert Health Professions Education. This module is not available as a stand-alone option. In addition, participants should be working towards a broad understanding of major theories of learning and teaching; an understanding of principles underpinning the process of planning and designing teaching and assessing in the clinical context; and should be able to critically reflect on teaching and learning facilitation issues in their professional practice.
What are the key aims of the module?
This module adopts an online self-directed and critically reflective approach, consistent with Level 7 study and the professional context of experienced health profession educators. Learning is predominantly independent and portfolio-driven, enabling participants to exercise autonomy, scholarly judgement, and critical self-evaluation.
A brief introductory session provides orientation to the concept of the portfolio and the professional requirements. pre-recorded sessions will direct students in their learning and development across the tasks in the module. These structured inputs scaffold subsequent independent engagement.
How will I study?
The majority of learning occurs through guided self-directed study, in which participants critically analyse their educational practice, map evidence against relevant professional standards, and synthesise pedagogy, research, and policy frameworks. Structured prompts and guidance materials support sustained critical reflection and standards-informed analysis.
Assessment is integrative and portfolio-based, requiring the construction of 5 critically reflective submissions evidencing professional practice, scholarly development, and alignment with professional standards. The portfolio culminates in a strategic, future-focused CPD plan and workplace mentor observations of your teaching practice Formative peer to peer feedback and workplace mentor feedback is provided at key points to support academic rigour and progression toward independent, critically informed professional practice.
To support writing and the development of assessed work, Online tutor led drop-in clinics will be available across the duration of this module.
