Edge Hill University launches new podcast, ‘Edge Ahead’

September 15, 2025

Edge Hill University are proud to announce the launch of its brand-new podcast series, Edge Ahead, aiming at inspiring, informing and connecting students, staff and the wider community.

The first series, ‘What’s in your Head’ delves into the vital topic of mental health, featuring candid conversations with leading figures from the University, sport, media and beyond.

Hosted by former Liverpool goalkeeper and honorary doctorate, Chris Kirkland, alongside acclaimed regional podcast host Gareth Roberts, Edge Ahead promises to deliver expert insight, guidance and support on issues that matter most to the Edge Hill University community.

The debut episode features Kirkland, alongside his wife, Leona, discuss his own battles with mental health.

Reflecting on the importance of the series, ex-Premier League footballer, Kirkland, said: “Mental health and wellbeing is a subject very close to my heart. At Edge Hill, we’re opening up conversations that matter – not just for students, but for anyone facing challenges.

“We are hoping the podcast will help do this. I take my role as an honorary doctorate at Edge Hill very seriously, and I want to help raise awareness and support people. Our guests are sharing their real-life stories and experiences, and I hope all our listeners find strength and support in their words.”

Kirkland, who played for neighbouring clubs Liverpool and Wigan Athletic, retired from football early through mental health issues, addiction, depression and anxiety.

The former England international wants to use his own personal experience for the greater good and make sure people know they are not alone with their own challenges.

Alison Kerwin, Director of Marketing, Communications and Student Recruitment, said: “We’re proud to launch Edge Ahead, a new way to connect with our community, share stories that matter, and open conversations that often don’t get enough space.

“At Edge Hill, we care deeply about creating an environment where people feel seen, supported and inspired. We are a community of real people doing extraordinary things, often while managing complex lives. This podcast gives space for honest, open discussion about the things that really matter.

“We’re starting with mental health, because it affects so many of us, and we believe in the power of sharing, to inspire change, to build connection, and to show what’s possible. Future series will explore other big topics that shape life at university and beyond, guided by the voices and experiences of our students, alumni, staff and wider community.”

While ‘What’s in your Head’ focuses on mental health, future series will explore a range of topics relevant to Edge Hill University, higher education, student life, current affairs and much more.

Listeners can look forward to a minimum of one episode published every month, featuring expert guests and inspirational stories.

Episodes of Edge Ahead will be available to stream on Spotify and on YouTube. Whether you’re on campus or tuning in from afar, Edge Hill invites everyone to join the conversation.
