What will I study?

The development and dissemination of knowledge is fundamental to a higher education institution such as Edge Hill. We offer two research degrees, the MPhil and PhD. These qualifications are awarded to students who have completed individual programmes of research and written a thesis reporting the results of that research.

A research degree differs from a taught degree in that you devise your own project and as part of your research programme, you will produce either an MPhil or PhD thesis, which you will submit for examination. Topics may result from personal interest, an area of study related to one of your earlier qualifications or it may be an issue your employer would like you to investigate in depth.

While both the degrees of MPhil and PhD are undertaken by independent research, there are clear differences between them:

  • MPhil: For an MPhil, you would need to display a convincing grasp of the techniques of research appropriate to the chosen field of study, demonstrate the ability to exercise an independent critical faculty and achieve a high standard of competence in argument and presentation.
  • For a PhD, you would be required to pursue scholarly research at a high level and make an original contribution to knowledge about the area. Additionally, your thesis must be of publishable quality.

You will normally register either for the MPhil or for the MPhil with the possibility of transfer to the PhD.

You will generally be expected to attend appropriate seminar and lecture programmes that support your research activities and will be supported during your study by a team of supervisors, who will have experience of your academic area and the research process.

The degrees may be studied on a full time or part time basis.
