BSc (Hons) ODP

Shab Basheer, BSc (Hons) Operating Department Practice

I want to be a strong advocate for those in my care, ensuring their safety, dignity and comfort throughout their surgical journey.

My son is my inspiration. My very first experience in an operating theatre was during the birth of my son.

I completed the Fastrack to Higher Education programme at Edge Hill. It was an incredibly supportive and valuable experience that gave me the confidence and preparation to progress into higher study. Excellent transport links from where I live make studying at Edge Hill University convenient and accessible.

Edge Hill offers everything I need. The Catalyst building is exceptional, providing modern study spaces and great support. I play badminton, and the on-campus gym and sports facilities are top-class. It’s easy to balance study and wellbeing. I regularly visit the multi-faith room. Calm and tranquil, it’s the perfect place to reflect after a busy day. And Roots café is my favourite place on campus – nice food, friendly staff, with a nice seating area outside.

My favourite part of the degree has been the hands-on experience you get. The learning environment feels very personal and engaging. Lecturers are incredibly friendly and approachable, which makes it easy to connect. Lessons often begin as relaxed conversations, helping us feel at ease, and then naturally flow into the subject matter, making complex topics more relatable and easier to understand.

I hope to become a confident and compassionate qualified practitioner, caring for patients as they enter the operating theatre. I want to be a strong advocate for those in my care, ensuring their safety, dignity and comfort throughout their surgical journey. Most of all, I aim to make Edge Hill proud by upholding the values and high standards instilled in me during my training.

The most challenging part of the degree so far has been balancing work, study and family life, especially with a three year old! The best thing about studying at Edge Hill, though, is the supportive atmosphere: great facilities, approachable lecturers, and a friendly campus that really helps you grow and succeed.

My advice to applicants would be…go for it! Make the most of the resources, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone – you’ll learn so much and feel truly prepared for your career. Edge Hill offers excellent support, hands-on learning, and a friendly environment.
