The support from Edge Hill during my degree has been instrumental in shaping my experience. I feel that everyone at Edge Hill, from my personal tutor to the careers team really want the best for me, as well as all my fellow students.

I knew I wanted to study law because it would stand me in good stead for a vast array of career options. I’ve always been good at essay subjects, so wanted to combine law with criminology as I knew it was a subject that is often open to interpretation and would challenge me to think outside the box.

I chose Edge Hill after attending an open day and falling in love with the campus. I had figured out from going to other university open days that I would prefer a campus university compared to a city due to the community feel and the fact that everything is in one place. Not only this, but the staff in the department also seemed genuinely enthusiastic about teaching and helping students.

I think one of the most important skills I’ve developed during my course is confidence. My communication skills have also improved hugely, as well as problem-solving.

The biggest change in my confidence has come from attending networking events held by the School of Law and Criminal Justice. Attending these throughout my degree has meant I’ve been able to interact with professionals in the legal field in a non-judgmental environment. The skills I’ve gained from attending these will be crucial going forward post university.

The most memorable moments for me have been attending the Law Ball each year. Due to a trip that the department organised in my very first week of university, I made a group of amazing friends who I have attended each Law Ball with, and every year we have the most amazing time, getting dressed up and forgetting about studying for a night.

My favourite thing about my degree subject is the combination of traditional theoretical modules and more practical modules. In my second year I completed a placement where I gained real-world experience that allowed me to foster skills that may not be developed through writing essays and sitting exams. This experience is also something I can add to my CV and is now invaluable when applying for graduate roles.

To me, the best thing about Edge Hill University is the number of extra opportunities there are available. In my second year, funded by Edge Hill, I was able to travel to The Hague in The Netherlands. We visited incredible institutions such as the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Court and Eurojust. This trip was such an honour to be part of, and I would never have been able to see those places if it weren’t for Edge Hill.

My favourite place on campus is the lake between Creative Edge and the Chancellor’s Court accommodation. My flat in first year had a perfect view of the lake, and I walk past almost every time I’m on campus, so I feel like it’s seen me through my entire time at Edge Hill which I love.

The best piece of advice I could give to anyone considering studying Law with Criminology is to not only look at the course, but the extra opportunities that the university will offer. At Edge Hill there is always something to get involved in, which is something I have found to be incredibly valuable and has 100% contributed to my growth as a person and a student.

The support from Edge Hill during my degree has been instrumental in shaping my experience. I feel that everyone at Edge Hill, from my personal tutor to the careers team really want the best for me, as well as all my fellow students. The amount of effort that goes into every event, every appointment, as well as just day-to-day lectures has made my experience incredible.
