My degree provided a strong foundation for my career as an Air Quality Consultant by combining practical experiences with theoretical knowledge. Fieldwork and laboratory experience further enhanced my technical and report writing skills, preparing me with the essential capabilities for consultancy reports.

My degree provided a strong foundation for my career as an Air Quality Consultant by combining practical experiences with theoretical knowledge. Modules such as Climate and Hazards deepened my understanding of atmospheric processes and environmental systems, while modules in GIS, Environmental Research and Remote Sensing developed my ability to collect, analyse and interpret data. Fieldwork and laboratory experience further enhanced my technical and report writing skills, preparing me with the essential capabilities for consultancy reports. Additionally, my degree strengthened my communication, critical thinking and project management skills through group work, presentations and independent research projects, all of which are invaluable skills in my current role.

My favourite thing about studying Geography at Edge Hill was the balance between engaging lectures, fieldwork and research projects. The skillset I graduated with was extensive and highly transferable.

Edge Hill supported my career enhancement and employability by providing guidance on CV writing, interview preparation and job applications. This helped me to confidently apply for graduate roles and transition from university to the workplace. The annual careers week was particularly valuable as it offered me the opportunity to network with professionals in the environmental sector and understand what type of careers are out there. The Geography Department even held mock interviews and job applications which allowed me to receive helpful feedback and build confidence when applying for roles.

The top three skills that I gained from my degree were:

  • Data interpretation and analysis
  • Communication
  • Critical thinking

I was inspired to pursue a career in Air Quality Consultancy following my dissertation, which focused on pollution around different landscapes. The topic of pollution fascinated me and completing this research project highlighted the importance of mitigating future impacts and making a real difference to air quality across the country.

My role is very varied and fast-paced, which I find extremely rewarding. No two days are the same as I am constantly facing new challenges, learning about different projects and adapting assessment methodologies to meet each projects needs. I am often providing desk-based assessments through the use of dispersion modelling, liaising with project teams and clients to discuss potential air quality impacts of developments and writing technical reports in support of planning applications for submission to the local authority. The variety keeps the work interesting and ensures that I am continually developing both my technical and communication skills.

If you are considering studying Geography at Edge Hill, I would encourage you to go for it. The degree offers a strong theoretical foundation and a wide range of practical skills that are invaluable for future careers. The department also has a number of lecturers with diverse research interests which allows you to explore different topics and discover the areas you’re most interested in.
