Matthew Tomlinson
BA (Hons) Computer Science
The most memorable moment of my degree has to be when I showcased my final project to fellow alumni and academics the day after submission. My final project was a Comparative Analysis of Forecasting Approaches to Hospitality Sales. During my time in the hospitality industry, I got a true grasp of its unpredictable nature. The project aimed to understand which factors influence these changes and how significant their impact is.
I chose Computer Science for the vast amount of opportunities it presents. Technology is embedded into almost everything nowadays, from all commercial sectors to personal everyday use. I’ve always desired to build software and digital solutions which solve real business problems and make a true impact.
I chose to endeavour on my Computer Science journey at Edge Hill for its community. The university staff and lecturers are very welcoming and really make you feel like you belong. Although I didn’t know anyone before starting at Edge Hill, I still felt as though I was a valued part of the community, allowing me to form valuable connections and friendships that will last long after graduation.
I have developed a lot of skills throughout studying Computer Science. For example, I have learnt a lot about technical writing and presentation skills, alongside time management while handling several deadlines. I have also developed more technical skills, including earning certifications in Microsoft’s Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900) and Security, Compliance, and Identity Fundamentals (SC-900).

I’d like to say my greatest achievement was academically inclined, but I look back on myself before starting my degree and struggle to recognise myself. The past three years have almost been an adulting fast-track. I’ve grown from not truly understanding what I wanted to pursue in life to actively investing in my future and striving to make a real difference.
My favourite thing about the Computer Science pathway is the vast amount of sectors it covers. I’ve completed modules in Software Engineering, Cybersecurity, Machine Learning, Data Analysis, Interface Programming and Network Security. The best thing about Edge Hill University, to me, is the support available to students. Whether an issue is personal or academic, support is always readily available.
My favourite place on campus has to be the green spaces it has to offer. They offer a place to gather your thoughts after a potentially stressful day of work, and attract all kinds of wildlife.
When I graduate, my priority is to gain any commercial experience that I can. The freedom that awaits me is very exciting but also quite daunting, so I aim to use it to my advantage and make a positive impact.
My advice to someone considering Edge Hill is to visit the campus and get a true feel for what it has to offer.Explore the facilities and the surrounding area. It’s worth it.
Edge Hill has been a source of support throughout my journey as a student. They offer support and encourage students to advance professionally through a variety of opportunities, including certifications, study abroad programmes, placements and access to industry-standard software.
