Edge Hill University gave me the confidence and freedom to explore my passions and grow in ways I never imagined.

I had been searching for schools abroad and stumbled upon the website page. I chose Edge Hill University because of my department’s tight-knit community and immediately knew I would feel at home. I relied on other students’ experiences and module representatives since I could not attend open days.

I chose biological sciences because research has always inspired me. Being able to look beneath the surface feels magical, like seeing the unseen. Biology impacts global economies because everything we can think of ultimately relates back to the environment.

My experience at Edge Hill University has been supportive and accommodating. I have grown academically and personally, discovering my own voice as I progressed. Getting involved with extracurricular activities gave me the confidence to take academic leaps I might have been fearful of before.

The teaching and learning environment is excellent because the smaller university setting allows for individual attention. Tutors know you by name and provide one-to-one support, making you feel seen and heard. There is always someone in your corner offering guidance or advice.

Support from the University has been invaluable. I have specific learning and support needs, and the resources available have allowed me to learn in the way that suits me best. The library and departments provide technology and modifications, and the Careers Corner has guided me through CVs, applications, and career benchmarks. The university bridges the gap between education and career, and using the resources wisely maximises your experience.

The campus community is vibrant and inclusive. There are sports, societies, and departmental activities that cater to a variety of lifestyles. My department fosters a culture of collaboration and knowledge-sharing, letting me explore multiple perspectives within biology.

I recommend that new students try everything. Participating in different sports and societies strengthened my CV and taught me skills I would not have gained otherwise. Diversifying your experiences prepares you for the changing workforce.
Some of my most memorable experiences include being part of the cheerleading team, where practices offered stress relief and connection, and taking up trampolining, a completely new sport. These activities have broadened my perspective on physical activity and personal growth.

A highlight from my time at Edge Hill was overcoming the loneliness of moving to a new country alone. By volunteering for representative positions and engaging in campus life, I built confidence, improved my communication skills, and created a fulfilling student life.

Challenges included public speaking, which I initially struggled with. I overcame this by joining societies, presenting at conferences, and taking roles that pushed me out of my comfort zone. Opportunities like being a Student Advisor allowed me to gain confidence addressing peers and parents alike.

Edge Hill University helped me grow academically and personally. I learned that no one has it all figured out, and we all build each other up through shared struggles and successes. I now appreciate that effort and consistent improvement are what lead to meaningful growth.

The course prepared me for a flexible career in biology. Practical modules allowed me to explore medical and environmental biology, while internships and volunteering provided managerial, research, and practical experience. The diverse skill set I developed has prepared me for any future opportunity.

My advice to new students is to stop worrying about what others think. Your decisions shape your future, and taking opportunities that interest you, even if unconventional, can lead to unique and rewarding experiences.

One thing I wish I had known before starting is that what you put in is what you get out. Investing time and effort in your studies, extracurricular activities, and niche interests creates a rewarding and transformative experience.
