The course dives straight into industry standard labs, which is exciting and really builds confidence.

I chose Edge Hill University for my BSc (Hons) Biotechnology because it offered the perfect balance of a highly practical, up to date course with extensive hands on lab work in areas like genetic engineering, molecular biology, microbiology, and real world applications. The modern facilities really stood out to me, especially the labs in the Tech Hub and the Life Sciences building, which made practical learning feel professional and engaging.

As an international student, I was also drawn to the strong support system. Guaranteed on campus accommodation, airport meet and greet, visa guidance, the Global Friends programme, and a welcoming community made the transition much easier. Knowing there were other Sri Lankan students on campus and approachable staff gave me reassurance from the start. The peaceful, all in one campus in Ormskirk provides a focused study environment, while Liverpool is only a short train ride away, offering culture, diversity, and affordable city life. Overall, Edge Hill felt like the ideal place for quality teaching, excellent international support, and a great student experience without the overwhelm of a large city university.

I chose the BSc (Hons) Biotechnology because it is one of the fastest growing fields in science and addresses real global challenges such as disease treatment, food production, and environmental issues. I was particularly attracted to the strong focus on hands on practical work using industrial techniques, access to cutting edge facilities in the £17.4m Life Sciences building, and teaching by research active staff who bring the latest developments into the classroom. The course perfectly matches my passion for applied science and the practical skills employers look for.

My experience studying Biotechnology at Edge Hill University has been positive, hands on, and rewarding. There is extensive practical lab work using specialist equipment such as scanning electron microscopes and microbiology suites. Lecturers are knowledgeable, approachable, and genuinely supportive, which has made a big difference for me as an international student. The peaceful campus, high student satisfaction, and easy access to Liverpool make studying here both motivating and enjoyable.

What stands out most about the teaching and learning environment is the hands on focus. There are lots of practical lab sessions in modern, industry standard facilities, supported by research active staff who bring current developments into teaching. The department has a welcoming, close knit feel, which creates a motivating and supportive learning space.

The University has provided excellent academic and career support. The Careers team has been especially helpful in offering guidance and advice, which has been a game changer for me as an international student. Personally, the international support services helped me settle in quickly and feel confident navigating university life in the UK.

The campus community at Edge Hill is warm, welcoming, and close knit. Students come from all over the world, and there is a real sense of inclusion through events and buddy schemes that help new students settle in. As a student from Sri Lanka, I felt comfortable and supported from the beginning.

My favourite place on campus is the Education Lake area. It is peaceful, surrounded by greenery, and perfect for relaxing, walking, or quiet study. Some of my most enjoyable moments have been walking around campus on sunny days, grabbing coffee from The Hub, and spending time with friends from different backgrounds.
One highlight for me was Freshers’ Week. The atmosphere on campus was buzzing with music and welcoming energy everywhere. As a Sri Lankan international student, it instantly made me feel connected and at home. It turned what could have been a nervous start into a really joyful memory and showed how inclusive Edge Hill is.

Like many international students, I faced challenges such as homesickness, adjusting to the UK lifestyle, and managing an intensive course with frequent labs and deadlines. I overcame these by reaching out to the International Support team, building routines, staying connected with family, joining societies, and improving my time management. The supportive staff and campus community made it much easier to adapt and grow.

Academically, Edge Hill has helped me develop strong practical lab skills, independent research ability, and confidence in applying biotechnology concepts. Personally, studying abroad has increased my independence, resilience, and adaptability. My role as an International Student Ambassador has also improved my communication, leadership, and cultural awareness.

My course has prepared me well for a future career through hands on experience in industry standard facilities, exposure to real world biotech applications, and opportunities such as placements and projects. Combined with the support of research active lecturers and my ambassador role, I feel confident pursuing a career in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, or further study.

My advice to new students, especially international students from Sri Lanka, is to embrace the supportive environment and get involved early. Reach out to the international team, take part in activities, and make the most of the opportunities available.

One thing I wish I had known before starting is how quickly the course moves into advanced lab work. It is exciting but can feel overwhelming without good organisation. I also wish I had realised earlier just how proactive and welcoming the international support team is. Getting involved in airport meet and greet and settling in events really helps reduce homesickness.
