MbChB Medicine - research internship student

It is always beneficial to learn new skills, talk to new people and set yourself a challenge

I wanted to join the Summer Internship Programme to get experience working with people in other fields, make new professional relationships and challenge myself to learn new skills.

My internship focused on planetary health, sustainability and medical school curriculums. Through the project, I learned a lot about how medical schools aim to teach students and the different approaches they take to achieving GMC outcomes. It gave me an insight into an area of medical education that I had not previously explored and helped me understand more about how medical training is designed.

I also learned about the importance of planetary health and how vital it is within healthcare. The internship helped me understand how environmental sustainability will affect us as doctors in the future and influence the decisions we make throughout our careers.

One of the most valuable parts of the experience was working with people from different backgrounds and learning from individuals with expertise in areas beyond medicine. It allowed me to develop new skills, build professional relationships and gain an understanding of parts of medical education and healthcare that students may not normally have the opportunity to see.

I would recommend the Summer Internship Programme to other students because it is always beneficial to learn new skills, talk to new people and set yourself a challenge. I think many students would find the internship particularly interesting because it provides an insight into how medical schools and teaching work behind the scenes, something they may not otherwise experience during their degree.
