Daniel Valentine

Postgraduate Education (PGCE)

Edge Hill gave me the tools to plan effectively, communicate clearly, and write with purpose, skills that have underpinned my career ever since.

Daniel Valentine, 50, from Kent, chose to study his PGCE at Edge Hill University because of its strong reputation for excellence in teacher training.

“When I decided to study a PGCE, I chose Edge Hill for the same reason I studied History at Oxford University, because it has the finest faculty in the UK. Never compromise, always study with the best.”

One of Daniel’s favourite aspects of the course was the University’s flexibility and commitment remote learning, which allowed him to study in a way that suited his schedule. He credits Edge Hill with helping him develop essential skills that have benefitted his career, including planning, communication, and writing.

During his time at Edge Hill, Daniel accessed support through the Union Learning Fund, which helped him make the most of his development opportunities.

Daniel’s advice to current and future students: “Plan your assignments carefully and get feedback on your plan. Keep going.”

After several years of teaching at the postgraduate level, Daniel moved into consultancy and corporate communications. He regularly visits universities to speak to students about careers in communications and marketing, sharing his expertise and experience in the sector.

Daniel is Head of Communications at the Chartered Governance Institute and serves as Chair of the Lovey Foundation UK, a registered charity dedicated to rescuing child workers in rural Ghana and giving them access to full-time education.

Talking about his role at Lovey Foundation, Daniel said: “Our volunteers identify child workers and meet with their parents to encourage them to allow their children to attend school. We provide everything they need for that first day – uniforms, shoes, satchels, stationery and then continue to support their educational journey.”

Since Daniel’s appointment as Chair in 2023, the charity has grown substantially, supporting 50% more young people and expanding its network of schools. Currently, Lovey Foundation assists around 130 children each year.

Daniel continued: “Chairing a small charity is a rewarding but demanding leadership role. I lead the board of trustees to ensure effective governance, set strategic direction, create a positive culture, and act as an ambassador for the charity.”

Daniel’s dedication was recently recognised when he received the Trustee of the Year award at a ceremony held at the historic Rochester Corn Exchange.

Daniel said: “It was a real honour to receive this award on behalf of Lovey Foundation. It means a great deal to our volunteers and supporters and highlights the significant progress we’ve made in the last two years.”

For Daniel, the best thing about Edge Hill University is the opportunity for flexible learning and the supportive environment that encourages students to achieve their best: “Edge Hill gave me the tools to plan effectively, communicate clearly, and write with purpose, skills that have underpinned my career ever since.”
