Hi, my name is Daniel. I am studying Computing at Edge Hill University. In my spare time, I enjoy Photography and flying my drone. Interestingly, I was once learning to be a private pilot to fly light aircraft.
What made you join Thrive?
I was nervous about returning to education and didn’t know if I would fit in and cope. The Thrive programme allowed me to understand the process, support and expectations of being a student at Edge Hill University.
What did you enjoy most about Thrive?
I have enjoyed taking part in the workshops, especially the DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) where I able to see what it was like to work within the Civil Service, what jobs are available and the process of applying.
How did Thrive support you?
The best support I’ve had at Thrive is having a personal coach throughout my first year. My coach (Claire) has been very supportive, in regular contact, and has even encouraged me to fulfil my potential and take all opportunities available.
Did anything surprise you about Thrive?
I couldn’t believe how much support Thrive has given me! The extra workshops alone have given me insight into what graduate opportunities are available.
Can you share one challenge you faced in your first year, and how you tackled it?
The most challenging thing for me was the seminar sessions at the beginning of the semester. I quickly learned they are not at all what you would expect compared to school and college. However, I have realised that the seminar sessions are there to support you. If you are struggling with something in particular, reach out to the seminar tutor and even classmates and try not to feel nervous – everyone is learning.
What advice would you give to students about to start Thrive?
Try not to be scared, nervous or shy. University can be daunting, but also exciting. Thrive will support you in every way they can, and you’ll be surprised by what you can achieve.
What are you up to now?
I’ll enter my second year in October; I’m excited as this is the year I’ll start to do my specialisms. I am hoping to study within Data and Cyber Security and get a placement before completing my final year.
