Daniel Murphy
BSc (Hons) Child & Adolescent Mental Health & Wellbeing
I chose Edge Hill because from the first open day I attended, I fell in love with the campus and its peaceful setting.
I wanted to study this degree because I have family members who had mental health difficulties while in the education system, so I wanted to study this to hopefully provide help and change to the current system.
I chose Edge Hill because from the first open day I attended, I fell in love with the campus and its peaceful setting. The open campus is the best thing about Edge Hill to me, as it allows students to have the correct mindset each day. My favourite place on campus is the Catalyst. It can be used as a meeting place for friends while being a place you can get a bite to eat or a hot drink. It also offers private rooms and quiet areas for students to work.
The top 3 skills I would say I have developed would be my understanding of child and adolescent mental health and the history of it, while gaining a better understanding of the different legislation. I also believe the nature of the degree has developed my empathic skills.
I would say that the most memorable moment of my degree so far has been my first placement, as I left to plan and develop the workbooks and sessions for primary school children.
My favourite thing about my degree is the tutors who provide their knowledge and insight from their backgrounds regarding the sector, while also always being on hand to help students with issues. They are always an email away from answering any questions and providing help, while the campus provides the open space to have a peaceful mindset, so you can produce your best work.
My advice to someone considering studying this degree at Edge Hill is that while it is a challenging course with challenging content, it is rewarding, so I would say make sure it’s a sector you are sure about. I am not 100% sure yet what I want to do when I graduate, as working with children is at the heart of why I am doing this degree, but I also have an interest in the different policies that underpin the sector, so I would like to work among them.
