This has undoubtedly improved my employability by allowing me to speak a new language and acquire confidence in meeting new people.

What was your overseas opportunity?

I took part in a summer programme in Spain, where I learned Spanish language and culture. this opportunity was led by The University of Jaen Centre for Higher Studies in Modern Languages. The programme featured 80 teaching hours, as well as additional university-organised activities and free time to explore the city and other places.

What interested you in an overseas opportunity?

I was very interested in learning Spanish, experiencing a new culture, and meeting new people.

How did you find out about the opportunity?

I found out about this opportunity through the University’s International office.

What did you gain from your experience?

This programme allowed me to learn a new language and culture while also meeting people from Edge Hill, Spain, France, and Canada. By visiting historical sites coordinated by the university and myself, I gained further experience in understanding historical information about Spain.

Where there educational elements to your opportunity, what did you learn? E.g., learn a new language, teach a session, participate in a short course?

I took the Level A1 intensive course in Spanish language and culture. It includes learning in class as well as extracurricular activities such as trips to Jaen churches, Arab baths, and an olive production tour. We also went on a guided tour of the Gran Mezquita in Cordoba, the Alhambra in Granada, and typical marketplaces across the city. At the end of the course, I completed an exam and was certified a remarkable rating.

What has been the most memorable moment of your experience?

The most memorable experience would be spending quality time with friends while studying the Spanish language and touring other places around Spain in my spare time.

This has undoubtedly improved my employability by allowing me to speak a new language and acquire confidence in meeting new people.

Has this experience led to further opportunities for you?

This chance has made my CV stand out since it allowed me to get fresh experience and discover a different culture.

What do you hope to do when you graduate?

After graduating in 2024, I plan to pursue an MA in Early Education or psychology.

Would you recommend this experience to other students and what advice would you give?

I would certainly recommend this experience to other students since it is an amazing opportunity offered by Edge Hill University for students to develop new skills for 5 weeks.
