Edge Hill University announces new Christmas tradition with Ormskirk carol concert

December 3, 2025

Edge Hill University is beginning a new tradition with a Christmas Carol Concert, bringing together students, staff, friends, residents and the wider community.

This magical evening of music and community spirit will take place on Thursday 11 December, 6pm at Ormskirk Parish Church.

The free concert is a family-friendly event, open to all, and will feature performances from choirs, schools and a brass band.

Professor Michael Young, Vice-Chancellor of Edge Hill University, said:

“Edge Hill is at its best when staff, students and our neighbours come together, and events like this help keep us firmly rooted in our local community.

“I’m delighted that we’re starting this new tradition and sharing music, joy and the spirit of the festive season with you.”

The 45-minute concert will feature performances by pupils from Ormskirk CE, Bickerstaffe CE, Ormskirk West End and Ormskirk Asmall Primary Schools.

Over 70 Edge Hill Musical Theatre students will sing a classic carol in Dickensian costume, joined by the Edge Hill Gospel Choir, Side-by-Side Staff Singers and the Manchester-based Paramount Brass quintet.

Reverend Canon Stuart Haynes from Ormskirk Parish Church said:

“Everybody loves a good carol. All are welcome to the Edge Hill community carol concert for a traditional Christmas celebration this year.

“The programme looks fantastic with traditional, moving and rousing carols and I am really looking forward to hearing some beautiful music in the glorious setting of the parish church.”

Nicholas Sanders, Musical Producer for the concert and Programme Leader and Senior Lecturer in Musical Theatre at Edge Hill, highlighted the value for students:

“It’s great that our students get the opportunity to perform and do something that will add to the richness of their university experience.

“They have been rehearsing for the last few weeks and are excited to bring their performance to everyone. It is a great way for us all to finish off the year and start the festive period, and an excellent opportunity to come together with the wider community.”

Donations collected on the evening will be gifted to two local charities: The Anthony Rawsthorne Foundation and Hope Street community cafe.
