Edge Hill graduate stars in Educating Yorkshire during first year of teaching

October 31, 2025

Edge Hill University graduate Joshua Geary has had a remarkable start to his teaching career, starring in Channel 4’s Educating Yorkshire during his first year in the classroom.

Joshua, who graduated in 2024 with a BSc (Hons) in Secondary Maths Education with QTS, is now a Secondary school teacher of Maths at Thornhill, the school featured in the popular documentary series.

Joshua said: “When I signed my contract, I thought it would be a normal first year, then a month before term started, we found out the school was going to be filmed again. It was a bit chaotic at first, but once the novelty wore off, it felt like normal school life.”

Despite the cameras, Joshua thrived in his new role, teaching five classes and 150 pupils. He describes the year as “fantastic” but admits it came with challenges.

Joshua commented: “Behaviour management was a big one, not every teenager loves maths for an hour. But the highs always outweigh the lows. Seeing pupils’ faces when they get their results makes it all worth it.”

Joshua credits Edge Hill University for preparing him for the realities of teaching: “Edge Hill was fantastic in showing all the different sides of teaching. My lecturers were incredibly supportive and helped me develop my confidence and communication skills, things I use every day in the classroom.”

Watching himself back on Educating Yorkshire was a surreal but rewarding experience. Joshua said: “Seeing myself on TV with my family made me proud, and a bit embarrassed when I sang. But it also helped me reflect on my teaching and realise how much I love what I do.”

Looking ahead, Joshua hopes to move into leadership roles and help new teachers develop. He’s also determined to challenge the perception that maths is only for certain students.

Joshua said: “I want to show pupils that anyone can do maths. It’s for everyone.”

Joshua also had a message for trainee teachers following in his footsteps: “Observe as much as you can, reflect on what you do well, and enjoy the journey. Teaching is one of the most rewarding careers there is.”
