Edge Hill University has teamed up with Biffa, a leader in sustainable waste management, to overhaul waste and recycling across campus.

This partnership aims to boost recycling rates and enhance sustainability efforts for the whole university community.

Biffa will now manage all general, recycling and food waste streams, including collections and sorting at the University’s on-site waste compound. This streamlined approach will reduce waste contamination, ensuring more materials are properly recycled.

Ben Aldred,โ€ฏBiffaโ€ฏregional commercial manager, said: โ€œWeโ€™re delighted that our new partnership with Edge Hill University provides staff, students and visitorsโ€ฏwith a market leading service following the launch of Simpler Recycling for businesses in April, while supporting the campus’ sustainability strategies and our own commitments to social value and community engagement.”โ€ฏ

This collaboration is expected to bring significant measurable improvements. A new weighing station will provide detailed data on waste creation, allowing the University to run more effective campaigns to reduce waste at its source.

This strategic partnership will be instrumental in helping Edge Hill deliver on its Waste and Resource Strategy for 2024-2029, creating a cleaner and more sustainable campus for everyone.

The ceremony concluded with a special reveal from Professor Ray Sheriff, Associate Head of Engineering. He unveiled a prototype of a robotic pill dispenser, a project developed by three second-year engineering students based on one of the competitionโ€™s winning designs.

“The awards ceremony provides an inspiring showcase for recognising the ingenuity and creativity of school pupils,” Ray said.

“It also gives our engineering students the opportunity to develop their group project skills during the prototype build.”
