David Sweeney CBE awarded Honorary Doctorate from Edge Hill University for services to higher education

July 23, 2025

David Sweeney CBE, one of the UK’s most influential figures in higher education research policy, has been awarded the title of Honorary Doctor of Education by Edge Hill University.

The award recognises his distinguished career in research leadership and his lasting impact on society and the future of academic research and its contribution to society.

David is Professor of Research Policy at the University of Birmingham and was the founding Executive Chair of Research England within UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).

In this role, he was responsible for creating and sustaining the conditions for a dynamic research and knowledge exchange system in English universities, overseeing the allocation of over £2 billion annually in funding for research and knowledge exchange activities.

His leadership was instrumental in the development and implementation of the Research Excellence Framework (REF) and the introduction of the research impact agenda — a key factor in securing ongoing government support for research funding.

David said: “I’m genuinely touched to receive this award. It means a lot to me because it reflects something I’ve always believed in, that higher education should be open to everyone. Over the years, I’ve seen how it’s started to reach more people from all walks of life, and to have my part in that journey recognised is really special.

“My belief is that we should offer opportunities to all, and Edge Hill University is a wonderful example of an institution that does that. It is a real privilege to be recognised, and I am grateful to the University for bestowing this honour.”

David’s work aligns with Edge Hill’s mission to widen participation and promote opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds.

His advocacy for the role of universities in driving societal change reflects our University values of academic excellence, innovation, and community engagement.

David said: “I have visited Edge Hill before and one of the things that amazed me about the place is that the University has a unique experience planned around student growth It is so thoughtfully managed.”

David received the honorary doctorate during a graduation ceremony on Edge Hill’s Ormskirk campus in July 2025.
