Edge Hill University 2nd Year Drama Students present Staging The Play: Charley’s Aunt

Step into a world of wit, mischief, and mistaken identity as 2nd year Edge Hill drama students present two of the greatest comedies ever written.

Set against the stylish backdrop of 1926 England, The Importance of Being Earnest and Charley’s Aunt are reimagined in an era of glamour and social change—yet their razor-sharp humour and timeless themes remain as fresh as ever.

In Charley’s Aunt a simple plan spirals into comic chaos when an unexpected impersonation unleashes a whirlwind of romance, confusion, and outrageous farce.

Though a century has passed since our newly realised setting, the questions these plays ask still ring true today: Who are we when no one is watching? How far will we go for love? And why is society so delightfully ridiculous?

Brimming with sparkling dialogue, bold characters, and laugh-out-loud moments, this double bill celebrates the enduring brilliance of classic comedy—proving that some things never go out of style.
