2012 Entry Requirements

You would normally have as a minimum a lower second class honours degree. Accreditation for Prior Learning (APEL) is available within the programme where you can provide evidence demonstrating matching learning outcomes from previous courses / experience to this programme.

Who is this course for?

This programme is for people caring for or working with children, young people and their families from a variety of backgrounds including health, education, private sector organisations and the voluntary sector, social care and other allied disciplines.

What will I gain from this programme?

The programme is designed to enhance and develop skills in critical analysis, developing your knowledge and confidence in supporting and championing children and young people.

How we will support you

You will receive academic supervision on an individual level from the module coordinator who will support you with any queries or concerns. The programme leader will also be available to deal with any other issues that may arise. Further support is available via Student Services and you will have access to state-of-the-art learning environments including excellent library facilities at the Ormskirk Campus.

What will I study?

You will be encouraged to share knowledge, expertise and experience as you look at contemporary issues related to children, young people and their families.

Modules concerned with partnership and leadership will explore your experience of working together and your concept of yourself as a ‘leader’. You will then consider public health and families in crisis, looking at issues relevant to your own interest, before considering child and adolescent health and social inclusion.

Finally, research and dissertation modules give you the opportunity to explore in more depth topics of interest which will enhance your own knowledge and experience, making recommendations for change where applicable.

How will I study?

Teaching methods are varied and include debate, discussion, sharing of expertise, lectures, group work, and individual and group tutorials.

Who will be teaching me?

The individual modules are lead by highly experienced senior lecturers with expert external speakers further enhancing the learning experience.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment of work is by essays, seminar presentations, report writing and portfolio development.

What are my career prospects?

This programme is specific to those wishing to pursue careers with children and young people and by studying on this programme you will demonstrate your commitment to your chosen area of expertise.

Careers in children’s services, children’s centres, education, private and voluntary sector organisations, health promotion, public health and human resources may be enhanced by this Masters degree.

Fees and Finance

Tuition fees for this programme are £280 per 10 credit module, £560 per 20 credit module and £900 for the 60 credit dissertation for academic year 2012/13.
