This degree enables you to work as a mental health nurse in a variety of settings, ranging from a hospital ward or clinic, to a patient's own home, health centre and in the community. As a specialist nurse you will be able to develop an individual package of care designed to offer the appropriate levels of support to meet the needs of a patient with mental health problems.
The course is for those who wish to work closely with individuals and their families to promote healthcare and support those who have healthcare problems. This degree has a distinct inter-professional emphasis.

2012 Entry Requirements
Typical offer 260 UCAS tariff points including 160 points from two A levels at grade C or above. In addition, candidates are normally expected to have a minimum of five GCSE passes (or equivalent) at grade C or above to include English Language and Mathematics, together with evidence of academic study within the last five years. The selection process includes an interview.
If you accept an offer from Edge Hill you will need to satisfy the requirements of the Nursing & Midwifery Council in respect of physical and mental fitness and will be required to apply for a Criminal Records Bureau Enhanced Disclosure indicating that you meet the mandatory criteria of 'Clearance to Work with Children and/or Vulnerable Adults'. Further information will be sent to you after you have firmly accepted an offer.

In addition, candidates are expected to have a minimum of five GCSE passes (or equivalent) at grade C or above to include English Language and Mathematics, together with evidence of academic study within the last five years. Access to HE Diploma candidates will achieve 45 Level 3 credits at Distinction or Merit grade. BTEC candidates should refer to the UCAS website for specific entry requirements. The selection process includes an interview.

What will I gain from this programme?
You will be fully prepared for a lifelong career in an innovative and expanding profession, and able to make an effective and creative contribution to the health and social care sector, specifically patients with mental health problems.
How we will support you
As well as your placement mentor/supervisor you will have a personal tutor and year lead that will support you throughout the programme. You will also have module coordinators to support you for each module you study.
What will I study?
The degree comprises of a three year programme. It offers a variety of perspectives on health, ill health, health promotion, life sciences and nursing practice in a range of settings and comprises approximately 50% theory and 50% practice.
Opportunities to achieve national generic and field specific competency outcomes related to professional values, communication and interpersonal skills, nursing practice and decision making and leadership, management and team working are provided within a supportive learning environment.
Successful students will achieve 120 credits at Levels 4, 5 and 6 (degree) and professional registration.
How will I study?
A variety of methods, such as seminars, lectures, work based learning and tutorials will be used to deliver this programme. Some modules also include enquiry based learning and technology enhanced learning. The theory part of the programme is delivered during a normal working week.
Placement
You will spend 50% of your time in practice which will be undertaken in hospitals and community settings. During this time you will have a practice placement mentor/supervisor who will support your learning and development. Placements will include weekend, early mornings, evening and night work to ensure access to a full range of practice experiences.
Who will be teaching me?
All lectures are delivered by professionals within the field of nursing as well as specialists in other areas. The programme team represent a range of qualified, research-active professionals with extensive experience of working within the health and/or social care sector. Most importantly service users, carers and their families will be involved in facilitating your learning so that you gain an understanding about the impact care has on individual groups.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment in both theory and practice is continuous, assessed against national outcomes and generic and field competencies with students required to demonstrate evidence of their achievement. A range of assessment of theory procedures is in place including assignments, seminar presentations, advanced notice examinations, online learning activities, case studies and portfolio work.
What are my career prospects?
Following registration as a mental health nurse you can pursue a career in a wide variety of settings and specialisms. These include general psychiatry, the elderly, addictions, community nursing and young people.

Fees and Finance
If you are joining this programme in academic year 2012/13, you can expect your tuition fees to be paid by the Department of Health.
As a pre-registration nursing student, you may be entitled to receive a means-tested NHS-funded bursary which for academic year 2012/13 is up to £3,351pa if living at home with parents or up to £4,395pa if living elsewhere. The bursaries are usually paid monthly by the NHS Business Services Authority. Additional means-tested payments may be made, for dependants for example, but each case is viewed on an individual basis.
For academic year 2012/13, pre-registration nursing students may also be entitled to apply for a £1,000pa non-means tested grant and a non-means-tested student loan. The loan amount for the first two years of the programme is £1,744pa if living at home with parents or £2,324pa if living elsewhere. The loan amount available in year 3 is £1,324pa (living at home) or £1,811pa (living elsewhere).

Modules
Year 1
PUP 1177 Learning in Inter-professional Practice: Developing Competency (40 credits) is a practice-based module which will enable you to develop your proficiency in accordance with the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). The module will facilitate your understanding of the nurse’s role in the context in which nurses work in partnership with the inter-professional team in order to deliver safe, compassionate, person centred and evidence-based nursing practice.
PUP 1178 Foundation Sciences for Nursing (30 credits) provides an introduction to the life sciences that underpin nursing. The focus will be on the theory and application of biological, psychological and social sciences, together with the pharmacological contexts that underpin contemporary nursing care. You will also develop a wide range of clinical assessment skills, e.g. temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure monitoring, and urinalysis.
PUP 1179 Understanding Health and Social Care (30 credits) provides an introduction to the fundamentals of health and social care and explores the values and behaviours that underpin professional practice. The module is designed to help you to understand the principles of safe practice and introduce you to the many factors that influence the health and social wellbeing of all patients/clients across the fields of nursing. You will be immersed in the skills, knowledge and values essential for the development of patient/person-centred care. There will be an emphasis on the importance of service user experience and the need for effective partnership working.
PUP 1182 Introduction to the role of Mental Health Nursing (20 credits) familiarises you with the concepts of mental illness, and mental health and well-being. The module will set the foundations on which to build appropriate skills around engagement, assessment care planning and implementation. Models of mental health and illness will be explored, including ethical and legal perspectives relating to contemporary mental health practice. A key theme throughout the module will be the inclusion of service users and carer participation. A service user will be invited to participate in discussions and engage with students as part of the learning and assessment process.
Year 2
PUP 2221 Learning in Inter-professional Practice: Enhancing Competency (40 credits) is a practice based module which will enable you to develop your proficiency in accordance with the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). The specific focus of this module is to facilitate a greater understanding of the challenges of team working within the context of inter-professional care delivery.
PUP 2222 Applied Sciences for Health and Wellbeing (30 credits) focuses on the disease process, its pathophysiology, homeostatic effects and the psychosocial factors involved. The pharmacological contexts will provide you with a clear understanding of the medicines management which underpins nursing care delivery. The continued development of key skills will enable you to undertake physical, clinical assessments of individuals/clients. This is essential for safe and effective care.
PUP 2223 Research Methods in Health Care (20 credits) is designed to facilitate understanding of the core elements that underpin the research process and the application of research evidence to practice. The module will develop your skills in relation to an appreciation of the need for good quality research within health and social care, along with the ability to appraise the quality of published research within your specific field of practice.
PUP 2226 Application of the Role of Mental Health Nursing (30 credits) introduces you to a range of evidence-based assessment tools. The emphasis of this module is placed upon the importance of engaging service users, carers and families through therapeutic use of ‘self’ and understanding of the central role of empathic and therapeutic interpersonal skills. The module will consider current research, key legal and mental health policy and its impact on service delivery.
Year 3
PUP 3230 Learning in Inter-professional Practice: Achieving Competency (40 credits) is a practice-based module providing the opportunity to reflect on practice learning experiences to date, recognise current skill sets and identify areas for development, in order that you are fully prepared for professional life. Further exposure to practice learning enables you to develop the confidence to practice and demonstrate competence within your chosen field. There will also be an opportunity to gain experience of international health care provision.
PUP 3231 Applied Sciences for Health and Wellbeing (20 credits) further develops the themes of pathophysiology and the psychosocial perspectives and interventions available within the health and social care context. Disease processes will be studied in relation to body systems, the aging process and death and dying. Appropriate clinical skills/assessment methods and techniques will continue to be taught and practiced in the skills laboratories
PUP 3235 Application to the Role of Mental Health Nurse (30 credits) provides you with the skills, knowledge and professional values required to become a competent mental health practitioner. This module will focus on the more challenging aspects related to contemporary mental health nursing including self-harm, suicide, euthanasia, addictive behaviour, personality disorder and disorder specific interventions. Utilising evidence-based research, you will examine the complexities and dilemmas associated with mental health care provision, both within the current climate and in preparation for the challenges facing mental health practitioners in the future.
PUP 3232 Preparing for Professional Role (30 credits) aims to develop effective leadership skills to enable work with others, to make improvements to services and contribute to care that is safe. This involves an understanding of professional accountability and the use of clinical governance processes to work effectively across professional boundaries. The module will enable you to become increasingly autonomous, work within complex teams and support the ongoing development of yourself and others.
