Summary 2012/13

• Develop an in-depth understanding of the challenges and rewards of leadership and management in an early years context;
• Learn to deploy accurately established techniques of analysis and enquiry within the area of Early Years Leadership;

This is a Level 6 conversion programme, giving you the opportunity to progress from a foundation degree (or equivalent) to an honours degree in a relevant subject.

The programme is primarily aimed at those students progressing from the Foundation Degree in Early Years Leadership, although progression from other related Foundation Degrees may be possible. You will develop knowledge and skills as an Early Years graduate leader enabling you to become an agent of change within your setting and beyond. There may also be the opportunity to achieve Early Years Professional Status alongside the Early Years Leadership programme.

Who is this course for?

If you already have an Early Years Foundation Degree and you are in a leadership role wanting to top up to a full honours degree then this course is for you.

What will I gain from this programme?

You will develop an in-depth understanding of the challenges and rewards of leadership and management in an early years context.

How we will support you

You will be given all the help and support you need to successfully complete the course. A personal tutor will be on hand to offer guidance on anything from academic writing and assignment planning to other, non-academic issues. Telephone, online and email support will also be available.

What will I study?

You will focus on the study of leadership and management in early years settings within a range of contexts, locally, nationally and internationally.

You will also learn how to boost your personal and professional development as a trained Early Years worker in the workplace.

How will I study?

The programme uses a variety of teaching methods, including lectures / presentations, collaborative group work, individual directed tasks and placement. Attendance is one full day per week.

Supported learning using the internet and Edge Hill University's online resources is a major feature of the programme. No prior IT experience is necessary, as full support will be provided.

Who will be teaching me?

You will be taught by a team of lecturers and associate tutors with extensive expertise and experience and a passion for their subject. All of the team are involved in current research and have actively contributed to projects including the development of the Early Years Foundation Stage and National Professional Qualification in Integrated Centre Leadership (NPQICL). Each member of the team brings a particular expertise and all are highly respected practitioners.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed in each module that you study. This may take the form of an assignment, portfolio, presentation or a combination of these methods.

Early Years is a rapidly growing sector and our Early Years students work in settings across the UK. We offer excellent support throughout the programme to help you gain an understanding of the opportunities that exist as an early years practitioner.

Fees and Finance

If you are joining this conversion degree in academic year 2012/13 and will be progressing directly from a foundation degree (disregarding any normal intervening vacation period between semesters), you will be classed as a "continuing" student provided you also studied the foundation degree on a part-time basis. The tuition fee for part-time continuing students on this progression route in academic year 2012/13 is £280 per 20 credit module and £420 per 30 credit module.

UK continuing students will be able to apply for an annual fee grant up to £1,230, subject to income level and intensity of study, and may also be eligible for a means-tested grant of up to £265 for books, travel and other course-related expenditure.

However, if you are joining this conversion degree as a new student, have taken a break from education since completing a foundation degree (disregarding any normal intervening vacation period between semesters), or you studied a foundation degree on a full-time basis, the tuition fee for part-time study is £1,500 per 20 credit module and £2,250 per 30 credit module for academic year 2012/13.

New students, and those not classed as "continuing" students, will not have to pay upfront for their tuition. The cost of tuition will be paid by a loan which you will only start to repay once you have finished the course and are earning over £21,000pa.
