Details

Who is this course for?

This degree is designed specifically for people who want to pursue a career in sports therapy and want a course with a strong practical emphasis underpinned by solid theoretical knowledge.

What will I gain from this programme?

You will gain an understanding of the key disciplines of sports therapy practice (anatomy, physiology, biomechanics and psychology) and practical knowledge including prevention of injury, the ability to recognise and evaluate injuries, treatment and referral, rehabilitiation and education and counselling. The course also offers the vocational skills you need to work in the field of sport and also gives you transferable skills that all employers are looking for.

What will I study?

In Year 1 you will get an introduction to the science behind sports therapy, with modules in anatomy, physiology and kinesiology, and you will start to learn the foundations of sports therapy and injury rehabilitation, including assessment, treatment and rehabilitation.

In Year 2, as well as building on your specific sports therapy skills, you will look at the mechanics of the body in more detail in applied kinesiology. You will also investigate the physiological demands of performance in applied physiology, explore the psychological effects of injury, and continue to develop the skills of manual therapy, including massage and remedial therapy.

Year 3 will require you to use all your knowledge of sports science and therapy to develop sophisticated sports training and rehabilitation programmes. You will also build on your understanding of treatment methods and apply your knowledge in a practical sports therapy environment. In addition you will complete a dissertation on an area of sports therapy of your choice.

How will I study?

The degree takes a hands-on approach, with practical experience in our purpose-built and well-equipped biomechanics, physiology and psychology laboratories. You will also have lectures, small group seminars, tutorials, workshops, taught practical sessions and ICT based learning. For each module you will have a detailed booklet that tells you what sessions are about, what to read, how you will be assessed and coursework guidance.

Who will be teaching me?

The Sports Therapy specialist team are highly experienced and enthusiastic with a real commitment to teaching and supporting students through their programme. As a team we are dynamic, friendly and supportive of individual student's needs. Staff are also actively involved in research and consultancy projects that influence the development of sport therapy and directly feed into your degree.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed using practical examinations, clinical portfolios, essays, critical analysis of papers, oral presentations, case studies and independent research. Given the professional requirements of the programme students are required to pass all elements of assessment on core modules.

What are my career prospects?

You will be well prepared and have the practical competencies to work as a self-employed therapist. You will also be well-equipped for employment within the health and fitness industry and within professional sport.
