Subject Knowledge Enhancement Mathematics
Summary 2012/13
- Develop subject knowledge in mathematics and prepare to teach the subject effectively to learners aged 11-16;
- Study on a programme specifically for applicants with a place on a PGCE;
- Benefit from flexible online study with at least one day a month on campus.
- No tuition fees - the programme is funded by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) and bursary support is available (subject to eligibility);
If you want to teach mathematics, but have an insufficient level of subject knowledge in your degree to gain entry to a Mathematics PGCE, then our subject knowledge enhancement course could be for you.
The aim of the course is to develop your subject knowledge in mathematics to prepare you to teach the conceptual and applied aspects of the subject effectively, with competence, enthusiasm and confidence, to learners aged 11-16 years. Trainees will be encouraged to prepare for teaching A-level topics where appropriate.
The course structure and length will be flexible to reflect the needs of each individual trainee.
Please note, in addition to this mathematics programme, subject knowledge enhancement courses are also available in chemistry and physics.

2012 Entry Requirements
You may apply for the course if you have been offered a place on a PGCE at a Higher Education institution in England, or if you are in the process of applying for the Secondary PGCE in Mathematics at Edge Hill University. Subject to availability, applicants from other providers will normally have a condition from their provider to obtain a place on a subject knowledge extension course.
Details
Who is this course for?
Short Courses, 1-2 units in length
Short courses, 1-2 units in length with an intensive 4-day laboratory course, are suitable for trainees with a degree in a highly mathematical discipline but where this was perhaps completed some years ago.
Longer Courses, up to 36 weeks
Applicants without a breadth and depth of mathematical study in their degree will most likely need to complete a longer course as a condition of entry to the PGCE. You might have a degree in a mathematically related area or a degree which contains a small amount of mathematical study alongside other subjects. There is a minimum requirement of at least an A-level in mathematics for entry to this course.
The actual length of the course depends on your qualifications and experience, and will be determined at a Needs Analysis session at the University. We will contact you to arrange this session shortly after we receive your application.
What will I gain from this programme?
- Address gaps in your subject knowledge;
- Develop your enthusiasm for working mathematically and to see yourself as a mathematician;
- Inspire yourself to promote learning in mathematics that is challenging and engaging for all students;
- Identify and build upon your prior learning and develop your capacity for future self study;
- Understand how mathematics is used in society;
- Develop an understanding of the connections that exist between topics in mathematics;
- Develop your use of appropriate technology in teaching and learning.
How we will support you
There are regular face-to-face meetings at the Ormskirk Campus and tutors will usually be in daily contact with you via e-mail. You will have full access to Edge Hill’s electronic and library resources.
How will I study?
The course structure and length will be flexible to reflect your individual needs. The course is divided into individual units, each requiring 50 hours of learning time, normally within a space of two weeks. This learning will be a blend of face-to-face sessions, online learning, and supported self-study.
How will I be assessed?
There are no formal examinations. You will build a portfolio from directed activities. Satisfactory completion of the portfolio and all directed activities is required to gain entry to the PGCE course. There is no direct teaching of mathematics subject knowledge within the PGCE so acceptable subject knowledge is a prerequisite.
