Putting You at the Heart of History
Ranked No. 1 in the North-West and in the Top Ten in the UK two years running by the National Student Survey (NSS 2010 and 2011), the History team at Edge Hill University is dedicated to providing cutting-edge teaching and research in the exciting field of Modern History – from conflict in the Middle East to crime on the streets of Victorian England.
Our focus is on supporting and developing students in a friendly and open learning environment, which is home to a thriving research culture. We will strive to inspire and motivate you to achieve your full potential as an employable, independent graduate.

Histories from Across the Globe
Our teaching and research are focused on Modern History, from the end of the 18th to the end of the 20th centuries, in Europe, North America and Asia.
In the first year, you will study the fascinating variety of subjects in Modern History, specialising in years 2 and 3 in subjects ranging from the struggle for civil rights in the USA to the history of the British empire in Asia and Africa.

'World-Leading' Research
The 2008 review of British universities judged that 30% of our published research is either ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’. In terms of ‘world-leading’ published research, we were ranked in the top third of History departments in the country– just behind the Universities of Lancaster, East Anglia and Exeter, and above the University of Manchester.
