Teaching Interests and Experience
I joined the English department in 1994 as an associate tutor before becoming a permanent, part-time member of staff in 2007. After graduating from Edge Hill in 1988 with a degree in English and Art and a PGCE in English, Drama and TEFL, I left England to live and work on the Portuguese island of Madeira. There I worked at Cambridge Language School, teaching EFL (English as a foreign language) for three years before taking over the role of Director of Studies and staying for a further two years. I returned to England in 1993 and read for an MA in discourse studies for language teaching and learning at the University of Liverpool. My dissertation looked at how mass media magazines (Cosmopolitan in particular) construct female gender identities. This is something I still find fascinating and continue to research. Over the years, I have taught on various language modules at Edge Hill to both BA and BAQTS students. I now contribute to various first year (or level 4) modules, as well as leading LNG3108 An introduction to TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) in the third year (level 6).
