The local area near the campus offers a variety of privately owned accommodation, whether you wish to live in easy walking distance from the University or prefer to live in Liverpool or nearby towns such as Southport, Wigan or St Helens.
Many students enjoy the extra independence renting off campus brings while still being able to fully participate in University life, whether it’s watching a film in the Studio Theatre, watching drama, comedy or live music performances at the Arts Centre, taking part in Students’ Union events, or using the sport and leisure facilities.
Living off campus, you will still have access to all of the University’s support services, IT and library resources, catering outlets, launderette, social areas and activities – the only difference to our on-campus students is you won’t be sleeping here!

Choosing Where to Live
Ormskirk is a thriving market town with a wide range of shops, banks, bars and restaurants. Within the town there is also a public swimming pool and leisure complex and public library.
More than 1,000 Edge Hill students live in Ormskirk, many of whom are based in shared student accommodation. A shuttle bus, Edge Link, operates between Ormskirk town centre and the University.
The Accommodation Team can help you find registered properties, all of which they aim to visit every 18 months to check against basic minimum standards. Properties with gas fittings must provide a current registered gas safety certificate before being placed on the University’s list of potential student accommodation.
A little further afield from the University, towns such as Southport and Wigan also have student accommodation and good public transport links, while Liverpool has a large number of student properties and offers an exciting city-based alternative. The centre of Liverpool is only 30 minutes away from Ormskirk on Merseyrail, with trains every 15 minutes during the day and every half hour at evenings and on Sundays.
Signing a Contract
You need to decide what you can afford to pay in rent before you start looking for properties. There’s plenty of accommodation available so there’s no need to take the first house you look at and you should never take a house without viewing it first.
If you are interested in renting private accommodation, our Accommodation Team are happy to provide an advice and guidance service but please be aware that the contractual agreement will be between you and the landlord – not Edge Hill University. We advise that you do not enter into a contractual agreement with property owners unless they are registered with us.
Any contract you sign with a private landlord is a legally binding document for a fixed term and you are financially liable for the rent for the whole term of the contract so make sure you’re certain you want a property before committing yourself. Before you sign any contract, it is best to seek advice from the Accommodation Team.
