TV medic Dr Zoe Williams receives Honorary Doctorate from Edge Hill University

July 26, 2022

Dr Zoe Williams, one of the country’s best-known GPs and resident doctor on ITV’s This Morning, has been awarded an honorary doctorate by Edge Hill University.

The practicing GP and media medic boasts accolades such as being named on the Pulse Power 50 List as one of the country’s most influential GPs. Outside of the surgery, Zoe is a National Advisor for Public Health England and is a clinical advisor to the Royal College of General Practitioners. She is a director and founding member of the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine.

She was made an Honorary Doctor of Science for her work promoting healthy lifestyles and for inspiring the next generation of health professionals.

“There are so many factors within my own life, aspirations and passions that align perfectly with Edge Hill; from the outstanding research in health, sport and medicine, to the amazing Tackling the Blues programme which works with young people to support mental health through physical activity.”

Zoe also shared some words of wisdom with Edge Hill graduates:

“We all have that gremlin on our shoulder, telling us we’re not good enough, or we can’t do something. As a matter of fact, I had one earlier today! But sometimes you need to tell that gremlin, ‘you know what, I’ve got this – and yes I can.’”

“My recipe for success is to work hard, believe in yourself and be ready to jump on opportunities when they come.”

In 2017, Zoe founded the non-profit organisation Fit4LifeCIC, which aims to have a positive and long-term impact on young people who have the most challenging lives. The organisation helps these youngsters to create their own physical activity programmes to improve not only their health, but also their wellbeing, while boosting and enhancing their life aspirations.

This work closely aligns with Edge Hill’s research focus on sport and wellbeing which has seen the University’s academics work in the community to improve the mental and physical health of young people through sport and art.

Dr John Cater, Vice-Chancellor of Edge Hill University, said: “The University is privileged to award Dr Zoe Williams with an honorary doctorate. Given her credentials she will serve as the perfect inspiration for our new intake of Medical School students who will soon be embarking on their journey to become doctors.”

As well as being resident GP on ITV’s popular daytime show This Morning, she presents on the BBC’s The One Show, Horizon and Trust Me I’m a Doctor. Her strength lies in sharing knowledge with the viewing public, specialising in debunking the confusing world of medicine in a way everyone can relate to.
