Undergraduate Religion and Philosophy

Our Religion and Philosophy courses are designed for anyone interested in exploring important questions about why people live in the way they do, and how concepts like faith, spirituality, ethics and race affect the public sphere.

Ranked top five in the UK for teaching on my course (National Student Survey 2023 – Theology and Religious Studies), you’ll explore practices as they’re lived in the 21st century and understand how religion and philosophy interface with society and culture. When you graduate you’ll be able to show employers flexible thinking skills and understanding of diversity and ethics, as well as empathy, sensitivity, and heightened social awareness.

Learn from research-active lecturers who have published in areas such as the use of the Bible in society, LGBTQ+ experience, philosophy in the workplace, and the history of Islamic traditions.

Studying religion and philosophy opens up a range of careers, from working in the civil service to becoming a journalist to supporting a charity.

Joining us on field trips and in guest lectures, you’ll cover the major belief systems in Religion, while Philosophy students will be introduced to the subject, and how it interacts with subjects like film, gender and colonialism.

Education and Religion student Lucy

The course is not at all what I was expecting when I chose to study Religion. But in a good way. We look at religion through lots of different lenses, including sexuality, gender, feminism, family origins and disability, which I hadn’t even considered before.
