Studying abroad provides an exciting opportunity to experience a new country and a different culture. You will forge new friendships and give yourself the perfect conversation starter at graduate job interviews.
There are many benefits of spending time studying overseas, broadening your horizons and adding a unique dimension to your studies, whether you’re looking to spend a year or just a semester abroad.
Global opportunities vary on a course-by-course basis so you should speak with your personal tutor, or other academic staff in your department, to clarify the specific opportunities that are currently available on your degree. The availability of these activities cannot be guaranteed.
It may also be possible to take part in short trips overseas or over the summer independent of your studies.
Spending time studying abroad during your degree can be a life-changing experience and significantly enrich your academic studies. It’s a great way to enhance your employability and make yourself stand out from the crowd.
Studying abroad provides a great opportunity to broaden your cultural and social horizons. You will be able to explore a new country, immerse yourself in the local culture, experience being part of an internationally diverse academic community, and build up your personal and professional networks while making new friends from a variety of countries.
You will gain life experience, boost your self-confidence, become truly independent and discover new strengths and abilities. Spending time studying overseas will demonstrate initiative, ambition and resourcefulness and show prospective employers that you can fit into different environments and are happy to embrace change.
Although classes at the vast majority of host institutions will typically be in English, meaning you do not need to speak a foreign language in order to study there, for many students spending time overseas represents an ideal opportunity to develop language and communication skills alongside their studies. You may also wish to consider our opportunities for learning a language, where relevant, in preparation for your time abroad.
Most students who have studied overseas will tell you that living away from your home country enables you to view it in a new light. You will almost certainly also find that you learn something new about yourself during what could be one of the most rewarding, stimulating and unforgettable experiences of your life.
If you wish to spend time studying overseas during your degree, we currently offer opportunities to study at partner universities in a variety of locations. These include Europe, North America, China, Japan and South Korea.
Additional opportunities to study in global destinations, in Europe and beyond, may also be available through the Turing Scheme, a Government-backed initiative which replaced the UK’s previous participation in Erasmus+.
If you are studying an undergraduate degree or integrated Masters degree at Edge Hill University and have the opportunity to spend an additional year studying abroad, this would usually be undertaken upon completion of two years of your course.
Alternatively, it may be possible to spend a single semester abroad during the second year of your studies.
Although UK universities are entitled to charge fees for years abroad, Edge Hill is waiving these charges. We will meet the cost of tuition fees for an additional year spent studying abroad as part of your course through the Student Opportunity Fund.
If you are spending a semester overseas as part of the second year of a 3-year degree or a 4-year integrated Masters degree, standard tuition fees will apply (as if you spent the full academic year based at Edge Hill University), however half of these tuition fees, i.e. £4,625 for academic year 2021/22, will be paid for through the Student Opportunity Fund.
Eligible students can apply for a Maintenance Loan. The maximum Maintenance Loan you can receive from Student Finance England for a year studying abroad is:
- Up to £10,866 for academic year 2021/22, of which up to £5,253 is non-means-tested;
- Up to £11,116 for academic year 2022/23, of which £5,374 is non-means-tested.
The maximum amount you can receive as a Maintenance Loan may increase if you qualify for certain benefits.
If you are domiciled in England and qualify for the relevant benefits, you may be eligible for an increased Maintenance Loan for a year studying abroad of:
- Up to £12,096 for academic year 2021/22, of which £5,253 is non-means-tested;
- Up to £12,374 for academic year 2022/23, of which £5,374 is non-means-tested.
