Postgraduate English

MA Nineteenth-Century Studies examines the literature, history, culture and digital humanities of the nineteenth century, with opportunities to participate in field trips to cultural heritage organisations and undertake work-based projects.

The programme explores different approaches to Romantic literature, such as new ways of close reading Romantic writing, and examines the role of feeling and emotion in the writing of this period. You will also engage with Victorian literature, building subject knowledge across a range of Victorian discourses and texts, from the sensation novel of the 1860s to the Gothic anxieties of the fin de siècle.

The literature of the nineteenth century is placed into the context of cultural development, with a particular focus on Victorian leisure and entertainment practices.

Specific aspects of English can also be explored in depth on our MRes Masters by Research or PhD Doctor of Philosophy, you can train to teach English on our PGCE Secondary English (Age Phase 11-16) with QTS, or gain practical skills in language learning and education on our MA TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages).
