Greg Doncaster is a Lecturer in Coaching and Sports Performance specializing in areas of Strength & Conditioning. Greg’s teaching responsibilities within the current programme focus on the area of Strength and Conditioning in relation to sports performance, with a specific emphasis on testing and training.
Greg joined Edge Hill University in September 2014, he has experience of working in high performance settings having worked as a Lead Sports Scientist for Stoke City FC’s Academy prior to his role at Edge Hill. His PhD focused on investigating the effects of cardio-respiratory fitness on soccer performance in highly trained youth soccer players and was awarded by Staffordshire University. Prior to this Greg completed his BSc (Hons) and MSc at University of Chester.
Greg’s research focuses in the area of applied physiology, particularly within high-level youth team sports athletes. He has a clear commitment to research-informed practice and evidence-based teaching and his current research interests include the effects of growth and maturation on physical performance in highly trained youth soccer players and the presence and implications of the Relative Age Effect within a range of sports at FC Barcelona. In addition, Greg continues to work with Stoke City FC’s Academy, aiding them in the evaluation of their training and match data, in an attempt to help inform future practice.
Greg’s external engagement activities include:
- Informing and analysing practice at Stoke City FC’s academy in collaboration with Sport Science Support Staff.
- Worked with academic colleagues to help analyse the presence of the Relative Age Effect in a range of youth sports at FC Barcelona, leading to an oral presentation at the European College of Sport Science International Conference 2018 (2017-2018).
- Aiding the Department with Wigan Athletics FC’s football academy, seeking to provide placement opportunities in an elite sports setting for Edge Hill undergraduates.
