The Department of Psychology is proactive in developing new approaches for supporting our students. Some of the ways we are integrating a support structure, particularly for fostering peer support among our students, is through our Integrated Learning Communities (ILC) scheme. This involves all our students entering their course within a small cluster of fellow students. each cluster is supported by academic tutors. This is designed to help our students feel a sense of community, integration, and belonging within their course. We have used this as a means of developing our Psychology Society in which we have a core community within our Department which is available for all our students to join and engage with.
A further benefit of the ILC structure is it can provide a framework to implement our Progressive Peer Coaching (PPC) scheme. This entails students to operate as peer mentors/role models for students in other cohorts. We have piloted this on areas of our curriculum which we know our students often struggle with (e.g., statistics). We are aiming to extend this further, to more fully integrate this into our support strategies and curriculum activities.
