BA (Hons) English Literature

I find the modules we study really interesting; you can tailor your options to suit your own interests and it is great to meet like-minded people who are as passionate about reading and literature as you are.

“Having been both an avid reader and a lover of theatre from a young age I knew I wanted to work with books in some shape or form, so becoming a BA (Hons) English Literature student seemed the logical step to take.

This has been a good decision for me and I find the modules we study really interesting; you can tailor your options to suit your own interests and it is great to meet like-minded people who are as passionate about reading and literature as you are. Sometimes it feels like this is the only place where you can make a book-related joke and someone will actually get it!

I particularly like the fact the Edge Hill is a campus-based University which gives it a real community feel, with the support we receive from the tutors being particularly good. They make it clear that they are available at any time to see students and provide any help we might need. They also put the effort in to stay in touch via e-mail and Blackboard, the University’s virtual learning environment.

I definitely feel my course will help me to achieve my goals because it has incorporated a variety of areas within it such as history, psychology, politics, sociology, theatre studies and geography, amongst others. We get to delve into so many different genres which influence the study of the subject, so I know that this will serve me well as I progress in my choice of career.

One of the highlights during my time at Edge Hill has been my involvement in the English Literature Society which exists to enhance communication among students. As well as establishing a Facebook page, we have arranged study sessions, daytrips, such as to the Bronte sisters’ house, and social events. These have all helped to build relationships and make the course even more worthwhile.

In the future I would love to study an MA with the aim of working in publishing, but I am keeping my options open as I progress through my degree. Whatever happens, I just know that I want to work with books.”
