BA (Hons) Creative Performance

You need to be open-minded, to listen to other people’s ideas, but also to engage and participate.

“My theatre teacher, at home in Singapore, recommended this Edge Hill University course to me. He knew I wanted to do a multi-disciplinary degree and thought this would suit me.

Other universities I looked at offered either dance or drama but here we also study physical theatre, visual theatre, devising, multimedia, aerial work, basically everything I wanted to study. The course is ideal if, like me, you want to go into performance but aren’t quite sure which area. It allows you to try things out.

The modules are interconnected and we have links with courses like Musical Theatre, so you are encouraged to experiment. We work in small groups, which is really rewarding. You need to be open-minded, to listen to other people’s ideas, but also to engage and participate.

Professional theatre companies, like Walk The Plank, have visited the department, and there’s the opportunity to take part in their performances, which is good for your CV. The tutors have also brought talent scouts to our performances and we have the option to study business modules later in the course, which will all help when I graduate. Eventually I’d like to run my own theatre company.

I knew as soon as I came to the open day that I would like being here. People cared that you had a good experience on the day, and that has carried over to relationships with our tutors. They genuinely care about you and speak to you like colleagues rather than students.

During this year I’ve needed some extra support. I have dyslexia and so receive help with things like writing essays and grammar. I’ve also been homesick and so have had some counselling, the people here really look after you. There’s a great student life here as well, which has helped, including Pride Week, movie nights, live performances and feel good festivals. It’s been a really good experience so far and a great start to my adult life.”
