I particularly value that we are being taught by people who have many years of teaching experience, with knowledge of all of the latest technologies, tools and techniques to pass on to us.

“After being employed in schools for a number of years, including working as a mathematics specialist teaching assistant, I decided to join the BSc (Hons) Secondary Design and Technology Education with QTS degree as I wanted to progress further in my career.

I chose to train to become a teacher as I really enjoy working with secondary school pupils and want to help make a positive contribution to their lives, as I have seen happen with a number of outstanding teachers I have worked with over the years. I opted for design and technology because I like the fact it allows pupils of all abilities, including those that may not be academically gifted, to succeed in school.

As I had undertaken my formal education in Canada I undertook the Fastrack access to higher education route offered by Edge Hill University. This proved to be invaluable, not only in giving me the qualification I needed to gain a place on the degree, but also in the advice and support I received because this gave me the confidence to begin my studies as a mature student and the belief that it’s never too late to achieve your goals.

There are a lot of practical elements to the course, including time spent in workshops, which has given me experience of lots of things I haven’t done before. Through these I’ve discovered that I thoroughly enjoy electronics, which is completely new to me, as well as CAD/CAM, brazing and silver soldering, so I am looking forward to using all the skills I have learnt when working with pupils during my placements.

The thing I like most about the course is the fact that the role of a teacher is embedded into everything we do. I particularly value that we are being taught by people who have many years of teaching experience, with knowledge of all of the latest technologies, tools and techniques to pass on to us. I really feel this will set us apart when we come to apply for jobs.”
