The placement allowed me to hone my field survey skills and gain relevant knowledge in identifying some of the most threatened organisms, and why we need to protect their habitats.

“One of the course highlights was the placement opportunity with Atkins, who provide ecological assessment and management solutions for a range of protected species across a range of environments, including terrestrial, freshwater, marine and coastal. They provide information for clients on how to comply with legal ecological issues and give advice on development of their projects. I shadowed employees on a range of different survey types, taking in locations all over the UK.

One of the most enjoyable experiences was participating in the bat emergence surveys. Although it involved getting up before dawn, the sight of hundreds of bats whirling above my head was worth the early morning wake up. The placement allowed me to hone my field survey skills and gain relevant knowledge in identifying some of the most threatened organisms, and why we need to protect their habitats.”
