“I loved my time at Edge Hill, it’s great to come back to campus and support career activities for current students”

Investing time in extracurricular activities and balancing these alongside his degree commitments prepared Mark Lang-Yates for a successful career on a leading retail graduate scheme.

Mark started his managerial retail career at Aldi in September 2012 after graduating from Edge Hill University with a Post Graduate Diploma in International Management, having previously achieved an upper second class honours in Physical Activity in 2011.

“The Area Manager training scheme at Aldi is tough, but very rewarding. The scheme is intensive, you need to progress from a Sales Assistant to Store Manager then Area Manager within a short time frame. Within ten weeks I was managing a store and after seventeen months I had the responsibility of my own 3 stores, which included overseeing all functions such as hiring and firing, leading the store’s management teams, financial planning, maintenance, audits and health and safety.

“The programme is fast paced and based upon your experience, performance, and what is going on in the business at the time; after 12 months I had the responsibility for managing multi-million pound businesses. I am passionate about developing my career here, there are many opportunities for progression within the company.

“I would recommend Edge Hill students to apply to the scheme as it is tough but very rewarding and there are many benefits such as excellent pay, pension, company car, health benefits and holiday allowance.”

Last year Aldi recruited 150 graduates to its Area Manager scheme from a pool of over 24,000 applicants. Mark was thankful for the guidance he received from the Careers Team at Edge Hill in helping him through the application process.

“Applying for the position involved a gruelling process of online applications, a 3 hour group interview and further one-to-one interviews, which was helped by guidance from the staff in the Careers Team. I was in the library working on my dissertation when I got the call to say I’d been accepted onto the scheme, I had to go home I was so relieved and excited!”

“I loved my time at Edge Hill, it’s great to come back to campus and support career activities for current students looking to apply to Aldi. I am more than willing to help and offer advice for students considering a career at Aldi, there’s great opportunities within the company for future Edge Hill graduates.”
