Lucy Mahoney puts her success at gaining a place on a coveted graduate trainee scheme down to the confidence she gained during her degree. Now a Business Analyst at Spirit Data Capture, she uses the skills she learned at Edge Hill in her daily working life.
I was very fortunate to go straight from University into a graduate trainee scheme for Spirit Data Capture, an independent mobile computing and data capture house that works with the latest wireless and mobile computing technologies. As a Business Analyst/Project Manager I attend Technical Workshops for new and prospective customers, helping them to define their requirements so that we can create an informed and effective solution for them. I do everything from producing the initial functional specification documentation to testing the software to delivery, and in some cases, training the customers on the software.
I enjoy the customer facing aspects of the job and thrive on working with organisations to perfect their requirements and produce an excellent solution. I love the fact I am always learning – no two projects are the same so I’m getting exposure to a range of different scenarios which will help me progress in the role.
Edge Hill gave me my degree, but I feel I gained much more than that from my student experience. It allowed me to establish effective time management to deadlines, which I am able to apply in my role today. I also gained a significant amount of confidence in myself and my true potential that I didn’t have when I started the course.
My advice for students who are looking for a graduate role after leaving Edge Hill is to get advice on writing your CV – having a good CV can work wonders – and make sure the spelling and grammar is all correct! As an employer, it’s one of the first things we pick up on.
Don’t just jump at the first graduate job you see because you’re worried nothing else will come up; it will. Make sure the graduate scheme you choose suits your needs and ambitions.”
