“The Law department has very friendly and knowledgeable staff. I would have to attribute some of my success to John McGarry, who was my personal tutor. His support really made a difference.”

Not content with heading up the commercial law team at Alan Roberts Solicitors in Chester, Lucas Griffiths is planning ahead. He has started a number of businesses and is now making plans to take one in particular Stateside.

Lucas received an LLB Law degree from Edge Hill University, then went on to train and qualify as a commercial solicitor. He’s also obtained higher rights of audience, which gives him the same standing as a barrister in the civil courts, and has qualified as a civil and commercial mediator. It’s this latest skill which has led to the creation of Clear ADR, a team of experts who specialise in alternative dispute resolution.

Lucas says: “Essentially, a mediator facilitates without-prejudice discussion with the aim of reaching mutually beneficial settlements. There are several advantages to this – not least the protection of commercially sensitive information.

“I have been involved in numerous multi-million pound disputes and often parties are able to reach agreements that would be unavailable to the court as a remedy.”

Lucas took a gap year before embarking on his degree at Edge Hill and travelled extensively in America – even working as a horse riding instructor in Kentucky. He still has a passion for the US, which is why he is expanding his business over there, and offering franchising opportunities worldwide.

The Lancashire-born lawyer says he always knew a legal career was on the cards.

“Originally I planned to specialise in criminal law, perhaps naively watching too much Law and Order,” he adds, “but now, having practised in both, I have chosen to specialise in commercial law, which for me involves intellectual property, commercial litigation, and particularly large scale disputes.”

And he praises Edge Hill for the quality of its campus and course.

“The Law department has very friendly and knowledgeable staff,” he says. “I would have to attribute some of my success to John McGarry, who was my personal tutor. His support really made a difference.”

Lucas is still involved with the team at the University, heading back there to talk to current students about their future options with the Law Alumni Association. Lucas also offers two scholarships per year on his mediation courses and provides students with work experience opportunities, as well as giving discounted training to Edge Hill staff, students and alumni.
