“I decided to enter teaching because I wanted to follow in the footsteps of one of my A level teachers who was such as inspiration. As well as this, I wanted to share the enthusiasm I have for my subject with the secondary age group because I feel I will be able to connect with them and create good educational bonds.
Since joining the Secondary Computer Science and Information Technology Education degree I have studied a wide range of topics, which has broadened my horizons and enhanced my subject knowledge. Alongside this, I’ve found the timetable to make best use of teacher, independent and hands-on time.
As part of the course I have undertaken three practical teaching placements each year and was lucky enough to go to the Isle of Man for nine weeks, which was an unforgettable experience. Apart from the placements the course has been very practical and through this I have built websites, databases, flash artefacts, networks and magazines, allowing me to enhance my knowledge of a range of software.
The practical approach of the course has been extremely valuable and given me the opportunity to improve my subject knowledge and develop my skills so that I can teach the subject effectively, while also allowing me to attain good communication skills through the projects that I worked on as part of a team.
I’ve now been lucky enough to secure a job upon graduation teaching secondary computer science and ICT at Tollbar Academy in Grimsby, which is an amazing school that has been rated as Outstanding for six years in a row.
Because of this it will bring its own pressures to perform, but I was over the moon when I was offered the job. There’s no doubt that the course at Edge Hill University has allowed me to become who I want to be and I feel as though I’ve made my family proud.”
