Katie Threlfall

BA (Hons) Dance

I’ve encountered so many aspects of dance since I started the degree as there’s so much choice within the course.

“I knew about Edge Hill’s dance degree through the reputation of its undergraduate dance companies. I’d seen both 3rdEdge and EdgeFWD at youth festivals and was really impressed. I’d also met some of the lecturers at workshops, so understood what I would find here.

I’ve encountered so many aspects of dance since I started the degree as there’s so much choice within the course. You also have the option to choose units from other disciplines, so I’ve studied contemporary circus and an installation and immersive performance module. You really are encouraged to be creative.

My favourite part has been the community dance module. It gave me the opportunity to teach dance to people with Parkinson’s disease at the Merseyside Dance Initiative. This was totally new to me but so rewarding and has informed what I want to do once I graduate.

There’s so much contact time and support from your lecturers who have a lot of knowledge and experience of working in the dance industry. They put so much effort into helping you figure out what’s best for you, while also advising you about opportunities that are available.

Both the course and my experiences in 3rdEdge have really prepared me for life in the dance industry. You get so many opportunities to work with professional choreographers, including big names like Gary Clarke who I would love to work with again, as well as the chance to tour venues around the country.

You also get advice on being an independent artist, including how to apply for funding, how to budget and how to hire artists. I want to develop my own inclusive practice company when I graduate so all of these contacts and my industry knowledge will be really useful.”
