“Edge Hill gave me confidence in my abilities which enabled me to be where I am today, I couldn’t be more thankful for the opportunities they provided”

Studying Business and Management at Edge Hill helped Joshua Barnes to discover his passion for developing people, something which has helped him to rise through the ranks at Fletchers Solicitors.

After graduating from Edge Hill in 2013 Joshua has held various roles at the Southport-based Solicitors, and has recently been promoted to the position of HR and Resourcing Assistant where he’s responsible for everything from recruitment to attending careers fairs across the North West.

Joshua said:

“Shortly after graduation, I started working for Fletchers in an entry level position as part of the Customer Contact Team, but after proving myself I was moved into the People Team which involved managing junior recruitment. Fletchers provided me with intensive training to help me improve and build on my skills and I was honoured to be offered the role of HR and Resourcing Assistant on a permanent basis.

“I am lucky enough to love my job! No day is ever the same, and a typical week could involve anything from interviewing potential employees to attending careers fairs to promote the company. I thoroughly enjoy working for Fletchers and I feel valued by the company. They provide opportunities for employees, helping them to reach their goals through training and development – we even have our own training Academy which organises training sessions, guest speakers and webinars.

“When at University, at times I found the course theory a challenge, however all tutors at Edge Hill are dedicated and willing to help, in particular Keith Cook, who helped me discover my passion for HR. As well as learning necessary academic skills, I also learned many social skills which enabled a smoother transition from University life to the working environment.

“There are so many different ways to find your career, from apprenticeships, to graduate schemes and I would advise students to never give up. Even though aspects of University will be challenging, it will be worth it as there are fantastic opportunities out there for you.”
