“This course is a really brilliant fit for me. It wasn’t my first choice when I was applying to universities, but the vibe I instantly got from the campus, the facilities and the tutors when I came for my audition changed all that.
The course has been a personal and academic journey. It started with the history of drama and is ending with contemporary work, while in-between we have explored a wide range of practices and styles. We cover so much that you can make a very informed decision about what you want to specialise in and what you want to do next, whether it is further study or going into the industry.
I’ve really benefited from the challenges, both artistic and personal, that the course has presented. I arrived having acted in sixth form and thinking that performing comes naturally. Here I’ve been really challenged and presented with situations where I had to improvise, and that experience has grounded me.
Once I graduate I want to go to drama school and work towards becoming a professional theatre actor. I really didn’t expect that as I always thought I would go into teaching, which says a lot about the course.
The support I’ve received from my tutors in achieving that ambition has been second to none. They are all professionals and being around them pushes you to a professional standard, but at the same time they are friendly and supportive. It’s a healthy relationship.
It is also a very collaborative atmosphere with staff and students working together as peers. I’d expected lots of cliques amongst the students but it’s not like that here at all. Instead, we all really get the best out of each other. You get so much freedom to express yourself, knowing that your opinion is valued, and that in turn strengthens your confidence.”
